Number of U.S. architects continues to rise

BD+C

The number of architects licensed in the United States rose to 115,316 in 2018, according to the annual Survey of Architectural Registration Boards. This is a 2% increase from 2017 and represents a 13% increase compared to the number of U.S. architects seen a decade ago.

PPP gets the job done: Three-party deal saves time and money for client

Four years ago, The Weitz Company formed a public-private partnership with the city of Des Moines and Polk County, Iowa, for a $101 million hotel/convention center in downtown Des Moines. Weitz, acting as developer and design-builder, leased the land and borrowed the money for the project. The city and county formed the nonprofit Iowa Events Center Hotel Corp. to create a lease-purchase agreement for the property upon completion.

A car dealership whose owners are calling it the largest Nissan outlet in the country recently opened in Texas where, as is well known, everything is said to be bigger. In this case, it may well be true. Central Automotive Group’s Central Houston Nissan recently opened on a 16-acre parcel along the 610 loop and celebrated its grand opening June 12. The dealership building spans 162,500 SF.

Up, up and away: Dutch hospitality chain completes the world's tallest modular hotel

DeSimone Consulting Engineers (SE) partnered with Concrete Architectural Associates (architect) and Stephen B. Jacobs Group (AOR) on the 100,000-sf, 300-key citizenM Bowery Hotel in New York’s Bowery neighborhood. This is the second New York hotel for boutique hotelier citizenM, based in Amsterdam, but its first U.S. inn using modular construction. Architecture billings remain flat

Demand for design services in May remained essentially flat in comparison to the previous month, according to a new report today from The American Institute of Architects (AIA). AIA’s Architecture Billings Index (ABI) score for May showed a small increase in design services at 50.2, which is slightly down from 50.5 in April. Any score above 50 indicates an increase in billings.
