Built to Passive House standards, the New England home of Tom Risom and Pamela Austen is a trove of modernist design. Most will know Jens Risom, who died in 2016 at the age of 100, as a pillar of midcentury furniture design. But he also made a mark in a lesser-known way. The project is located on approximately 10 hectares of urban land south of the city of Macas. Its owners use this space as a distraction from the fast-paced life in the center of the city, as well as for fish and livestock farming. Around 2005, a water reservoir tank was purchased from an Argentinean company contracted to build the bridge over the Pastaza River, which was transported and located in the same area as the current project.

If you had told interior designer Mairead Murphy that she would be buying two houses within a three year span, she wouldn’t have believed it. It began in 2014, when she and her partner, Pete, were looking to buy a home in Melbourne, but the going was tough.

Sustainability begins with a conversation, and acquiring customer buy-in is entirely dependent on how the conversation is framed. Clients may not see sustainability as a priority out of fear of operational costs and quality.
