Concrete industry reduces carbon footprint by 13% over five years

National Ready Mixed Concrete Association ( NRMCA ) members have lowered their carbon footprint by 13% in five years, according to an association news release. “The 13% reduction in carbon footprint is for 4,000 psi (pounds per square inch) concrete, the most frequently used concrete in the United States,” said James Bogdan, senior director, sustainability initiatives for NRMCA.

Construction spending to grow modestly in 2020, predicts JLL’s annual outlook

Nonresidential construction spending, which rose by 3.5% in the second half of 2019, is expected to increase in 2020, albeit at a modest 2% clip, with demand projected to weaken as the year goes on. In its Construction Outlook for the U.S. 2020, JLL attributed last year’s performance mostly to the 10.1% rise in public spending. Construction employment was up 2.1% to 6.44 million, and construction unemployment dipped to 4.5%.

CaGBC launches new version of its Zero Carbon Building Standard

The Canada Green Building Council ( CaGBC ) recently unveiled an updated version of its Zero Carbon Building Standard. Version 2 incorporates lesson from over 20 zero carbon projects that represent a wide spectrum of building types including schools, offices, commercial offices, and industrial buildings. “These projects demonstrate that the industry is ready to raise the bar on expanded requirements for embodied carbon and energy efficiency,” according to a CaGBC news release.
