Joshua Tree’s Insta-famous Monument House is now a holiday home

The colourful PoMo compound is backdropped by striking desert vistas

Its pink, blue and green exterior has been the star of many a sneaky social media snap, but admirers can now spend a night at Joshua Tree’s Monument House.

Architect Josh Schweitzer designed the California property – his first piece of residential architecture – as a retreat for friends and family, only recently making it available to the public to rent.

Located close to the Joshua Tree National Park entrance, the postmodern home comprises a trio of cubes punctuated by unusual, geometric-shaped windows and doorways. Each is painted a different colour, apparently chosen to evoke the shades of cactus, desert rock and sky.

Colours carry through to the interiors, with armchairs and sofas arranged around a terracotta orange fireplace and light sage walls. Monument House’s rental listing promises ‘endless views’ from the desert home’s open-plan living space (and no pesky distractions from TV and cable).

The California holiday home sleeps two, though there’s room for several more to cosy up around its outdoor fire pit – screened from passersby by boulders. Monument House starts at $990 for a two-night stay via Homestead Modern.
