Higher bar on LEED may not be harder to reach

The U.S. Green Building Council expects to substantially revise LEED next year, requiring builders beginning in 2015 to take new and more-detailed steps to get buildings certified. “The bar is getting raised, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s harder to meet because of the way the whole industry is evolving,” says Nadav Malin, president of BuildingGreen, a consulting and publishing firm that writes a LEED user’s guide. read more.

New York contractors say they will pay tax despite a court ruling that the tax is unconstitutional

The New York Building Congress says it will voluntarily pay a tax declared unconstitutional by the courts because, it says, the money is vital to maintaining the city’s transportation infrastructure. “The least we can do is voluntarily pay the tax and we’re encouraging others that were exempted to pay the tax as well,” says Richard Anderson, president of the NYBC.

Minnesota law to spur development, job creation produced few jobs

Legislation that allowed local governments to direct excess property tax dollars from tax-increment financing districts into other private developments was supposed to kick-start construction hiring in Minnesota, but an examination found evidence of job creation was spotty at best, even as many companies cashed in on the new law. South Dakota prefers LEED over building code on state projects

Four years ago, South Dakota passed a bill requiring all new government buildings and major renovations to be LEED-certified, with some exceptions. The state engineer’s office has waived the requirement for 32 projects where the costs of certification would have been prohibitive, or because the renovations would encompass less than half the building, or for other reasons.
