On Wednesday morning, I’ll be leaving Westchester County and heading west to Denver, Colorado for AIA Convention 2013. Will you be there? The theme for this convention is “Building Leaders” and I expect much of the message from AIA will revolve around their current Repositioning initiative. AIA National is Repositioning. I am very encouraged after reading the recent article by AIA National President Mickey Jacob, FAIA in the current issue of Architect Magazine.

'Propelled by increasing economic optimism, commercial real estate industry executives say geographic expansion will be a key focus over the coming year, according to a recent survey conducted by KPMG LLP, the audit, tax and advisory firm. In the 2013 KPMG Commercial Real Estate Outlook Survey, 58 percent of executives said they expect their company to increase spending most on geographic expansion, up from 21 percent in last year’s survey and 11 percent from KPMG’s 2011 survey.

'Looking to create a unique atmosphere using natural materials for the Prahran Hotel pub near Melbourne, local architect Techné Architects cleverly incorporated a series of concrete drain pipes into the building''s main façade. The concrete pipes double as cozy booths for patrons and offer views of the street activity outside, according to Inhabitat''s Bridgette Meinhold, who recently profiled the renovation project.

'Real estate developer Fortune International has released details of its new Jade Signature property, to be developed in Sunny Isles Beach near Miama, Fla. The luxury waterfront condo building will include 192 units in a 57-story building near high-end retail destinations and cultural venues. Floor slabs will be cantilevered to create a rhythmic façade design.

'A trio of mixed-use towers planned for an urban redevelopment project in Toronto has been redesigned by planners David Mirvish and Frank Gehry. The plan was announced last October but has recently been substantially revised. Three tall buildings will replace warehouses and the Princess of Wales Theatre; they will include condos, a new campus for OCAD University (the Ontario College of Art and Design), and gallery space for the large modern-art collection of Mirvish and his wife, Audrey.

'The city of Austin, Texas, last week broke ground on its new Central Library, establishing a major civic presence and community gathering space in the heart of the city’s redeveloped Seaholm district. 'Cousins Properties Inc. has commenced construction on Colorado Tower, a 371,000-sf Class A office development in Downtown Austin, Texas. The 29-story building, designed by Duda/Paine Architects, will be the first high-rise tower built in Austin since Cousins developed Frost Bank Tower in 2003. The formal ground breaking ceremony is scheduled for June 4th.

'Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s administration has proposed new building codes for hospitals and multifamily dwellings in New York City to help them be more resilient in the event of severe weather resulting from climate change. 'The U.S. Census Bureau of the Department of Commerce announced today that construction spending during April 2013 was estimated at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $860.8 billion, 0.4 percent above the revised March estimate of $857.7 billion. The April figure is 4.3 percent above the April 2012 estimate of $825.1 billion. During the first four months of this year, construction spending amounted to $250.7 billion, 4.5 percent above the $239.8 billion for the same period in 2012.
