Hilltop DC home by George Ward asks for $2.2m

Cantilever terraces and glass create a series of ‘reveals’ across this 1960 hilltop home in Washington DC, designed by architect George T Ward.

The A F Maxwell House was created by the Vosbeck-Ward principal early in his career and has a boxy brick facade broken up by large spans of glass and pink and green panels. The four-bedroom house hunkers atop University Terrace in DC’s Kent neighbourhood.

Living spaces are staggered over several levels, with skylights and massive windows amplifying light across the interiors, which have many original midcentury finishes like original floors and tiling and bespoke built-ins – including spans of floor-to-ceiling library shelving that’s big enough even for the most dedicated bookworm.

The living room was added in 1987 to a design by Joan Fabry, of Fabry Associates Architects, with a full-height brick fireplace anchoring the space. Orange kitchen cabinets and modern appliances are a newer addition but keep the mcm vibe and – colour-palette – going strong.

Maxwell House is selling for $2.195m via TTR Sotheby’s International.
