Chengdu·Supo Gallery

The project is located in Qingyuan Community, Supo Street District, Chengdu, adjacent to Subo Park, within the green belt of Qingyuan Park, and there are many schools nearby. The name of "Subo" in Chengdu comes from an ancient bridge-Subo Bridge.

The Supo Bridge was built in the Ming Dynasty. It is a bluestone arch bridge with four holes and three piers and a long corridor. Song Dynasty writer Su Shi is an academician and once lectured at Yangliu'an in southern Chengdu. Out of respect for Su Dongpo (Su Shi), the bridge he crossed was renamed Supo Bridge. Today, although the Supo Bridge no longer exists, Chengdu citizens’ respect for Mr. Dongpo has continued to this day. There are many places named after Subo in Chengdu, such as Subo Sub-district Office, Subo Road, Subo Park, and Subo Overpass. For example, in "Wenjiang County Chronicles", the ancients lamented the Supo Bridge: "Where are the tourists, where are the pavilions, the bridge is empty and the water still flows."

The architectural image of the project originated from the disappearing Subo Bridge. We use the "corridor" of the Subo Bridge as the architectural image, and try to redraw the shape of the Subo Bridge in modern architectural language to bring back the memory of the bridge.

The project is located in a densely populated area in the west of Chengdu, and was used as a sales and display center in the early stage. Most of the buildings within one mile are residential buildings developed in recent years. In addition, the project is equipped with 3 kindergartens, 2 primary and secondary schools within 500 meters of the project, plus the cultural history of the "Supo Lecture Hall", making it a community with a strong artistic atmosphere. However, the surrounding buildings lack public space for cultural extension outside the school. In the later period, our building will be opened to the public as a small public art exhibition area in Qingyuan Community, increasing the cultural atmosphere of the community, and at the same time forming a quiet and vibrant medium-sized garden. Support surrounding parks.

Following the design principles of economy and environmental protection, the functional conversion before and after the renovation project does not allow changes in the spatial structure and high cost, so our team carefully considered the spatial organization during the design stage. The “Covered Bridge” concept meets the functional requirements of art and sales exhibitions at the same time. It not only makes a reasonable plan for the current and future circulation, but also combines the image building theory we insist on. The architectural image of the "covered bridge" also makes this building less "architectural" visually. It is more like a jade belt across the site, connecting the green spaces of the neighborhood in an interesting way.

Since the function used in the later period is an open public building, it is different from the common closed courtyard-style exhibition center. The building is concentrated as a whole, and it is integrated with the surrounding park and street space in an embracing posture. The large part is private and integrates various functional space requirements in one place; the narrow part is a corridor with open public space. While creating the feeling of entering home in the early stage, it also takes into account the "friendly distance" between the building and the surrounding parks, which is also a sense of ceremony that shapes the cultural exhibition space.

The entire building is like several layers of corridors stacked on top of each other, and the image of a "covered bridge" emerges spontaneously. The image of "covered bridge" is also continued in the building facade and indoor space adjacent to the park on the east side. The building has two floors. In addition to the internal interlocking stairs and elevators, there are two other stairs on the east side, which also form a sky corridor bridge. The four transparent big colored glazes also echo the "four holes and three piers" of the Subo Bridge in history to a certain extent. Distributed multi-stairs not only solve the evacuation problem of each space, but also provide necessary access channels and different access methods for the functional division and operation management of the building.
