South Korea’s oldest jazz club gets a new neon-lit home

Seoul’s All That Jazz Club is celebrating its 47th birthday with a new location in Yongsan – and theatrical interiors that pay homage to its roots.

Local studio Matter Better (mttb) oversaw the slick, glowing interiors of the storied bar’s new home on Itaewon-ro, which feels otherworldly and intimate. The design team had an impressive history to draw on: in 1976, All That Jazz was the first club of its kind to open in the country. It’s also where many Korean jazz musicians got their start.

Visitors enter via a bright red door and head down a neon-lit corridor to enter the main space, which is bathed in red light. Red curtains, walls, ceiling, and tubular sofas emphasise the effect. Dark wooden floors and tables and chairs in muted colours bring the experience back down to reality.

The stage is almost at eye level, creating an intimate atmosphere for guests, who can expect four live music sessions per night.
