Several years after its reveal, the bullet-proof Tesla Cybertruck is still inspiring companies to design auxiliary functions for its highly configurable truck bed — and Space Campers is one of them. The US-based startup has recently launched a concept for a wedge-style camper that maximizes the vehicle’s utility and performance. Echoing the Cybertruck’s nearly-impenetrable exoskeleton, the pop-up model will comprise ‘aerospace-grade composites and manufacturing processes to put strength, precision, and durability first,’ writes the startup.

With the production of the Cybertruck rumored to kick off in late 2023, Space Campers is calling for future owners to start reserving their campers, which will be ready and delivered within two months of receiving their trucks. The standard camper model comes in a black gel coat finish, but users can choose to upgrade to stainless steel for additional durability and heat shielding. Pre-sale price is $24,000, excluding accessories and upgrades.

a highly customizable operability

Three days ago, Space Campers released a concept video detailing the truck topper‘s state-of-the-art operability and highly customizable features. For installation, users can drop the camper onto the Cybertruck bed and attach it with a few clamps. Once set up, onboard air compressors help unlatch the roof with the flip of a switch. ‘Air actuators raise your camper in 30 seconds or less. To finish things off, you roll down the front tent wall and strap it to the truck tailgate. Zip it closed and you’re camping. Set up time will be less than 2 min,’ explains the company.

Within the camper nestles a murphy bed accessible from both sides and designed to accommodate two people. The sleeping volume folds into a backrest and tucks out of the way for up to 8 feet of standing room. Resting on detachable hinges, the bed platform can convert to an exterior table, a lounging chair, or a screen for outdoor movie nights.

Furthermore, users can pull out extensions stored at the foot of the bed that ‘become benches and tables that you can rearrange however you like for a comfortable zone or mobile office.’ For extra safety, every topper is equipped with lock-out bars and a built-in awning. Beyond spatial comfort, the startup also proposes an incognito mode of use, giving campers extra security and discretion by having the bed drop down so one can sleep with the camper closed.

Thanks to flexible built-in storage, users can accessorize the camper to include a fully equipped kitchen with a drop-in sink and induction cooktop, among other things. ‘The kitchen can move entirely outside with the addition of a back rack trailer hitch accessory; when closed, it provides an aerodynamic place to mount gear and detaches when not needed,’ adds the startup.

Specs-wise, the Space Campers’ topper boasts a 470 lbs base weight and includes four 110V outlets, USB ports, 12V/24V connections for accessorizing, a solar-paneled roof, and a 4-inch memory foam mattress that is big enough for two. Last but not least, a 220 volt tankless water heater provides instant hot water to the sink or collapsible shower. Future owners can eventually include additional customization features like a logo delete or custom embossing.
