a modern paradise: casa leria, a handcrafted beachfront oasis in mexico

a sunlit retreat in oaxaca, mexico

Architect Alberto Calleja sites this beachfront Casa Leria along the Pacific Coast of Oaxaca, Mexico. Showcasing sparkling vistas of the ocean, the property is nestled amongst the lush tropical plant-life of an ecological reserve in Puerto Escondido — an area home to a variety of wildlife and flanked by miles of untouched beaches along with mango, papaya, and palm fields. The holiday home was designed and handcrafted entirely with natural materials native to the Puerto Escondido area. Overall, the project comprises a main house for gathering which is surrounded by a collection of five separate private suites.

harmonizing modern design with tropical craft

Casa Leria harmonizes the hallmarks of modern architecture and design with the vernacular of its coastal site in Mexico. The main house is enclosed by a straw-thatched palapa roof, its unique geometry translating the traditional structure with a more contemporary expression. Surrounded by overgrown vegetation, these modern elements — designed by Taller Alberto Calleja — blend seamlessly into the tropical place. The project is brought to life with a Japanese construction and design approach to create a clean and minimalistic architecture.

With a total of five bedroom suites, the house is designed as a beachfront retreat for large families or groups — it is now available for rent via Welcome Beyond.

Casa Leria’s five separate sleeping quarters are connected by a network of wooden footpaths, like boardwalks elevated above the sand. Each room is fit with air conditioning, a ceiling fan, and its own ensuite bathroom, dressing room and closet. All of the bedrooms are spacious and inviting, with full-height doors which fully open to reveal the gardens and ocean.

The owner of Casa Leria comments: ‘What makes it special is its unique location, detailed architecture and design, all of which is embedded in an astonishing beachfront environment.’

the birth of casa leria

The site in Puerto Escondido, Mexico was the main inspiration behind Casa Leria’s inception. The owner explains: ‘Four years ago, while visiting Puerto Escondido to celebrate my wife’s birthday, we decided to look for a special place to build a house for family and friends. We never thought that we would find such an amazing location. Shortly after, we were introduced to Alberto Calleja, who is an outstanding architect and has built several houses in Puerto Escondido (including his own). He perfectly understood our tastes and needs.’

‘There are several reasons why Oaxaca is special to us. Not only does it have an amazing culture, traditions, history, food and natural beauty but we have close family links to the region. For me (and now for my family), Oaxaca has been a second home since childhood.’
