Home Design Trends We Want to See More of In 2023

Trends come and go, like shag carpeting and wood paneling. To create a beautiful home that stands the test of time, we’ve found it helpful to focus on a few key themes and pair them with long-standing design principles.

As we look at some of the home design trends for 2023, it’s clear we’re still asking our home to be our office, our gym, our place to relax, and our place to entertain (and be entertained). We are thrilled to see a continued movement to bring the outside in through colors and accents, and a new focus on designing rooms with purpose to make sure you have space for everything you need.

Here are a few design trends for 2023 that have us excited, including new ideas and ones that we continue to adore.

Natural Curves Throughout the Home

At UDA, Ltd., we’re always taking inspiration from the natural world. Rounded edges and undulating lines provide a sense of movement throughout the house and are reminiscent of the fluidity of nature.

The curved interior design trend creates a more relaxed, comfortable feel through both the room design and the furniture. Not only do curved lines appear more inviting than straight edges, but they also provide a flow, guiding guests seamlessly from one room to another and out to the view beyond.

The Saguaro Canyon residence welcomes guests with curved eaves over the front courtyard. These stepped overhangs radiate out from the rounded entryway, letting in the morning sun while also serving the practical purpose of keeping the rain off those coming in the front door.

In addition to curved architecture, the trend also extends to furniture and design accessories. Curved furniture signals luxurious softness and depth, encouraging you and your guests to sink in and relax. Rounded light fixtures, mirrors, and sculptures create interest with organic shapes and clean lines.

Sustainable and Earth-Inspired Materials

One of our core beliefs is that you don’t have to compromise your perfect design in order to be sustainable. There are a number of ways to include environmentally friendly materials in every room, from the building materials to your accent pieces. Organic and natural elements not only help lower your environmental footprint, but they also add the calming properties of the outdoors throughout your home.

The Privada Residence is a great example of using sustainable materials to enhance the luxury home’s custom design. The beautiful adobe brick masonry was made from locally sourced materials and perfectly matches the feel of the American Southwest. Because adobe is slow to absorb and release heat, it’s a naturally energy-efficient building material for homes in the desert climate. The flat roof common in Organic Pueblo homes makes a great place to tuck away solar panels, which are then hidden by the parapet walls. Consider a geothermal heating and cooling system to harness the temperature below ground, creating the ultimate energy-efficient residence.

While white can feel fresh, we’re looking forward to leaving all-white rooms behind. Inside the home, we’re seeing a move from neutral tones to more nature-inspired colors, such as cognac. Natural textures such as wood, leather, and wool also help create a calming and centering atmosphere. When selecting accent pieces, bring in hand-made artwork from artists you love, such as hand-thrown pottery, hand-carved sculptures, and woven tapestries.

Vintage is another popular trend that is also environmentally friendly. Antiques and retro furniture bring meaning and character to your home, without any new materials. Restore grandma’s hand carved rocking chair or find the perfect artifact at a local gallery to bring a little personality to your space.

Purposeful Design for Each Room

You ask a lot of your living spaces because living means a lot of things. It’s where you work, relax, exercise, learn, sleep, and entertain. Another trend we love to see is to create a home that functions exactly how you need it to, with rooms designed with intentionality and a focus on purpose.

Many rooms will need to serve multiple purposes, and that works if you are intentional about them from the outset. Your kitchen is meant to cook amazing four-course meals with state-of-the-art appliances and also welcome friends for coffee and conversation. Your guest house doubles as a quiet place to focus while you review contracts and join video calls. Identify how you want to use the space at the design stage of your custom home so you can include a reading nook in your personal yoga studio or a viewing room for your classic cars in your basement

When the owners of Prairie Pine Residence were designing their summer retreat, the well-traveled couple knew they wanted to display the Buddhist artifacts they had collected during their sojourns all over the world. There are nooks throughout the home specifically for these meaningful treasures, creating a private sanctuary and an environment of peace.

In addition to the room design, be intentional about the items and features within the rooms as well. Make selections that provide multiple uses, such as a custom divider used as a bookshelf or display to help define a space without using a wall, lighting with color-changing, dimmable lights for focused work or relaxing meditation at sunset, and sculptural bookends that help organize and add beauty.

Incorporating Wellness Design Principles

Like nature-inspired design, wellness-focused design is a trend we want to see everywhere. Remove the stresses of your day by incorporating a few basic wellness design principles into your custom home. Here are a couple of ideas:

  • Create a relaxing outdoor space where you can breathe in the fresh desert air. This can be as simple as a dedicated space for meditation, an inviting outdoor fire pit for enjoying the star-filled evenings, or a garden to tend your favorite succulents.

  • Install large windows to encourage ample natural light, which has been shown to lower blood pressure, among other health benefits. Having access to the amazing mountain views is also a plus.

  • Practice biophilia through the artful inclusion of indoor plants. From window sills filled with fresh herbs in the kitchen to a living wall, indoor plants can lower stress and improve air quality.

  • Install air purification systems that address both outdoor and indoor air quality, including integrated cooktop-vent hood technology, to keep the air in your home allergen and dust-free.

  • Select lighting in your bedroom and work areas that support your circadian rhythms. Find lighting that simulates the time of day and that works best for your productivity.

  • Choose quieter appliances and install sound-absorbing window treatments and finishes to cut down on noise pollution.

  • Make space for movement. Include opportunities for you to exercise in ways you enjoy, such as a home gym and barre studio or a pickleball court.

Wellness may look different for each person, but it is important for every person. Make your home a place that restores you.
