If you’re looking to tap into the high-desert life of Marfa, Texas, this newly renovated home may be of interest. Dating back to 2005, the property includes two dwellings designed by two different architecture firms: one by Tucson-based Dust and the other by Berkeley-based Rael san Fratello.

A stucco wall lined with native landscaping surrounds the home, creating a peaceful oasis.

"Each structure has its own purpose, with its own sense of place," says current owners Lindy Thorsen and Terry Mowers, who are selling the property to be closer to family on the East Coast. "We’re going to miss the incredible quiet of this place, as there is nothing better for contemplation and reflexion."

Upon entering the main structure, a long hallway leads to the primary living spaces, where a chef’s kitchen seamlessly merges with the dining area. As listing agent Kumara Wilcoxon notes, "organic materials contrast with industrial elements, as exposed Adobe brick walls mingle with concrete, aluminum, and glass."

The home’s contemporary flair is further enhanced by its strong indoor/outdoor connection, made possible via large sliding doors which open the living area to an enclosed courtyard and private sculpture garden. This volume also includes a bedroom, a full bath, and a covered patio off the kitchen.

"The soft warmth of radiant heat at our feet and the clean architectural lines are two of our favorite design details throughout," say the owners. "There’s also something special about living with earthen materials and floor-to-ceiling window walls."

The home’s two bedrooms offer direct outdoor access.

The second structure by Dust lies just steps away and presents a similarly airy aesthetic. Large windows and sliding glass doors frame the surrounding mountain views, while also drawing in ample natural light. In addition to a cozy office/lounge space, the dwelling houses the property’s second bedroom and bath, as well as another garden courtyard.

"Outdoor patios, native plantings, and cascading water features dotted across the four-acre property enhance the experience of nature," adds Wilcoxon. "Additionally, the electrical needs are met by solar panels."

With its central location, the residence offers easy access to a number of the area’s most popular destinations, including Ballroom Marfa, the Marfa Lights viewing platform, and minimalist artist Donald Judd’s Chinati Foundation.
