Daniel Arsham installs a vibrant basketball court at La Cite Radieuse Arts Centre

Sport and history converge in Daniel Arsham’s playful show at MAMO La Cite Radieuse Art Centre in Marseille, which sees him turn the gallery into a basketball court daubed in Le Corbusier’s signature colour blocks.

The show is called Le Modulor du Basketball and takes over the entirety of the gallery and rooftop space, formerly the modernist housing complex’s gymnasium.

Inside the brutalist space is a brightly coloured mural that picks directly from Le Corb’s Le Poeme de L’angle Droit (1955). These pastel shades are also used in hanging pendants above the court, flags, and even uniforms.

Arsham riffs on Le Corbusier’s ‘open hand’ symbol for the basketball hoops and backboards, while a ball rack (pictured above) borrows the silhouette from his iconic LC4 Chaise Longue.

Outside, backdropped by blue sky, are several sculptures, including a bronze of a Delorean Classic DMC and Greco-Roman style figures, all treated with Arsham’s signature crystal erosion.

This is not the first time Arsham has delved into basketball culture: the American artist is currently the creative director of the NBA’s Cleveland Cavaliers.

Le Modulor du Basketball runs until 25 September 2022 at MAMO – Cité Radieuse Arts Center, Unité d’habitation Le Corbusier, 280 bd Michelet, 13008 Marseille
