An all-female team gives Ghent’s Café ‘t Kanon a timeless makeover

Swooping ‘Streamline’ curves and a rich coffee-bean colour palette combine inside Ghent’s Petit Grand Cafe ’t Kanon, which has been revamped by an all-female team on its 35th anniversary. The cafe is located in heart of the Ghent, a stone’s throw from the medieval market square, and is a well-loved local spot. Its owners turned design practice Altu and creative directors Studio Stories to take ’t Kanon into a new era – while nodding to the ‘golden age’ of European cafes from which it’s born.

Unesco said it is “gravely concerned” about damage caused by Russia’s invasion forces in the cities of Kharkiv and Chernihiv and called for the protection of Ukrainian cultural heritage, including the country’s seven World Heritage sites. Pritzker Prize-winning architect Shigeru Ban has designed a wooden meditation retreat named Zenbo Seinei, which is nearing completion on a verdant site on the Awaji Island in Japan. Slated to open in spring, Zenbo Seinei will take the form of a long and slender wooden structure elevated on one side by steel columns. It is being designed by Ban for Japanese company Pasona Group , which oversees a number of facilities on Awaji Island in Japan's Seto Inland Sea.

The Bivacco Brédy shelter cuts a welcome figure in Italy’s remote Aosta Valley

This aluminium shelter cantilevers out from its rocky Alpine perch, offering hikers space to rest and recuperate on their hike through Italy’s Aosta Valley. Architecture studio BCW Collective designed the aluminium-clad mountain hut, which has suspended beds as well as seats and a large window framing the nearby Grivola peak.
