A San Francisco Victorian Conceals a Striking Rear Extension—and a Rooftop Hot Tub

The 1886 home retains its modest character from the street, but the renovation at the back tells an entirely new story.

Project Details:

Location: San Francisco, USA

Architect: Parcel Projects

From the Architect: "A historically preserved San Francisco Victorian cottage built in 1886 has been meticulously renovated and extended with modern additions for a family of four. A detached garage and woodshop were also added to the rear of the property, creating a courtyard style garden in between.

"The massing of the residence pushes in and out, shifting in response to site conditions at each level of the uniquely situated through-lot, resulting in a continuous flow that both extends to and draws in the immediate environment. These shifts blur the lines between exterior and interior, resulting in protected outdoor spaces and exposed interior spaces that invert the conventional configuration of public and private zones."
