Álvaro Siza’s first U.S. building completes in New York City

New photos have been released of Álvaro Siza’s completed 611 West 56th Street , the Pritzker Prize-winning architect’s first designed building in the United States. The 35-story luxury condo tower in Manhattan’s Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood stands 450 feet tall and consists of 77 residences. The project was jointly developed by Sumaida + Khurana and LENY.

As we have previously reported , lumber prices across the United States saw a 90% increase in May 2021 on the previous 12 months, adding an extra $36,000 onto the cost of constructing a new home. In a relief for clients and contractors alike, that record high was followed by a record-breaking 40% decline in June 2021 , although lumber prices have continued their wide fluctuation into 2022.

Scottish studio Loader Monteith has completed Ceangal House, a home on a working farm in South Lanarkshire with a layout and materials that were drawn from the original 19th-century buildings on the site.
