3 June 2022 Friday - Uncle Lim mediates

Two years ago, we designed a public park in front of our hospital. It was a CSR project by the hospital operator, so we likewise offered our services pro bono as did many of our fellow consultants. Our submission was not however approved by the local Council, due to some objections by councillors who had a different programme in mind for this park. We wanted a park to serve all sections of the community, from the young to the elderly and proceeded to create a series of 4 park spaces named after the 4 seasons. These were circular forms, defined by planting, change in floor material and in land form. The last feature was one which I am very excited about, because it created terrain in an otherwise flat site. Additionally, it created outdoor rooms whose walls are earth berms about 1.5 metres high.

Due to this rejection, we had to put this submission on hold and be resigned to the fact that our design might not take shape. As architects, our currency is our built work so this was a big disappointment for me personally.

Sometimes, one have to let things be and sit still to wait for an outcome. This could take months or years, and when one stops expecting something to happen - it does.

MP Lim Guan Eng offered to mediate, he was a friend of the hospital and wanted to see a good take shape, instead of going to waste. Especially when many people have put in time and effort.
