PLS Architects+Atelier MODS form café in south korea’s suburbs

PLS Architects and Atelier MODS collaborate on the composition of ‘In A Little Time’ café, which develops a simple concrete volume at the foot of Shinbulsan Mountain in Ulsan City, South Korea. The structure stands on the road to Jakcheonjeong Valley surrounded by pink cherry blossom trees. The project retains the commercial character while providing a sustainable space in the local area and a gathering spot for the residents.

Built at a location with a typical suburban landscape, ‘Inalit’ is arranged in a ‘U’ shape along the site boundary. The building primarily consists of the courtyard in the center, the interior space, and a pathway that connects the two. The public pathway located on the access road is the main entrance to the volume.

promenade draws the landscape into the interior

The main access road leads to the central courtyard, a space widely open to the outside that can be used not only by the café’s customers but passers-by of Jakcheonjeong Valley as well. The promenade stretches into the path and the courtyard extending the landscape and drawing it into the interior. This expansion of the natural element and the landscape holds one of the main intensions of the designers at PLS Architects and Atelier MODS. The interior arrangement develops according to the views of Sinbulsan Mountain, as the overlapping external space is gradually revealed. The construction embraces its surroundings and opens to the cherry blossom road inviting the area’s residents.
