Mexican architect Frida Escobedo has been selected to receive the third annual Charlotte Perriand Award. Bestowed by the Créateurs Design Association and named after the groundbreaking French designer, the accolade is given to architects who have "pushed the boundaries of the design and architecture landscape, inspiring innovation, and challenging conventional norms."
The Association praised Escobedo's architectural work, which includes the 2018 commission for the Serpentine Pavilion in London and the Met's modern and contemporary wing expansion in New York, for its "daring concepts, visionary approach, and profound impact on the field."
"In a field dominated by men, Charlotte Perriand created her own path: One that was fearlessly innovative yet deeply rooted in the belief that all beings have the right to beauty, comfort, and functionality," Frida Escobedo commented on her award win. "She shaped the world through her vast production of work while building a constellation of friends and colleagues, teaching us that collaboration is one of the most fundamental practices in the architectural discipline."
"To find myself acknowledged by this remarkable jury is an honor that resonates deeply within me," she added finally. "It serves as a testament to the enduring legacy of Charlotte Perriand, a legacy I am humbled and overjoyed to perpetuate."
Escobedo will join the previous winners, Jeanne Gang and David Adjaye, as the latest laureate of Le Prix Charlotte Perriand once she officially receives the honor at the Créateurs Design Awards Ceremony in Paris on January 20th, 2024.
