Landsec has released a fresh batch of artist's impressions illustrating the latest thinking behind plans to remodel the Buchanan Galleries shopping complex in Glasgow.

The evolving masterplan remains the subject of public consultation with the stage two event showing how the current building could be replaced by more landscaping and public spaces whilst retaining street-level shops and restaurants.

The ambitious plan calls for a full replacement of the Buchanan Galleries shopping centre, built in 1999, with a net-zero urban district. Removal of the present structure would permit the large site to be opened up, introducing new connections across the city centre while diversifying the tenant mix.

Nick Davis, senior development director at Landsec commented: “These illustrative images aim to bring to life some of our emerging ideas for the masterplan which reflects the feedback we have received to date from the public. We want more local voices to help shape our masterplan for this exciting project to create a more accessible, green, safe and vibrant city centre which works for everyone, and we would encourage as many people as possible to have their say.”

Early ideas include the creation of a large public space to the rear of Queen Street Station, incorporating a terrace or pavilion suitable for cultural or community events.

To date, no final decision has been taken on the Concert Hall steps, with Landsec leaving open the potential to reconfigure the space to permit a more accessible entrance while retaining an outdoor gathering place.

The design team is led by Foster + Partners in collaboration with Michael Laird Architects, Atelier Ten, Arup and New Practice.

It's a sign of old age that it feels like the Buchanan Galleries were built yesterday, and now they're to be demolished. Don't even get me started on the St Enoch Centre.

It all seems very wasteful in this day and age.

Never mind the Landfill. If they get it right we could get a new Munro from Glasgow's mall Rubble.
