30 Best Architecture Firms in Indonesia

Building on the tropical modernist tradition, contemporary Indonesian architects are forwarding the country’s tradition of urban reinvention.

Architizer Editors Architizer Editors

Indonesia is considered the largest archipelagic state in the world. Its wider adjoining land and maritime borders, as well as its colonial and post-colonial history, have greatly influenced the country’s built environment. Enfolding the local vernacular architecture, the Dutch colonial influences with the impact of the Hindu, Islamic and Buddhist iconic architecture within its urban fabric, Indonesia has become an amalgamation of architectural cultures. Architectural theorist and designer Joe Day writes, “Jakarta is perhaps the truest realization of a post-colonial cosmopolis.” Instead of witnessing a clash between tradition and colonial occupation, the Indonesian capital has seamlessly established its own unique architectural image.

In the late 1940s, the country gained its independence and set off to reinvent itself. It was one of the pioneers that invented the tropical modernist movement, effectively merging both local and modernist architecture principles. Bearing witness to the country’s innovative period when he was a child, Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas often referred to Indonesia as a place of reference for urban reinvention. Nowadays, Indonesian architectural practices produce a variety of public and private buildings, often intricately designed and assimilating different cultural and architectural practices. A common approach is the design of hybrid architectural spaces that take advantage of the local climate and promote open-air conditions between architecture and landscape.

With so many architecture firms to choose from, it’s challenging for clients to identify the industry leaders that will be an ideal fit for their project needs. Fortunately, Architizer is able to provide guidance on the top design firms in Indonesia based on more than a decade of data and industry knowledge.

How are these architecture firms ranked?

The following ranking has been created according to key statistics that demonstrate each firm’s level of architectural excellence. The following metrics have been accumulated to establish each architecture firm’s ranking, in order of priority:

  • The number of A+Awards won (2013 to 2023)
  • The number of A+Awards finalists (2013 to 2023)
  • The number of projects selected as “Project of the Day” (2009 to 2023)
  • The number of projects selected as “Featured Project” (2009 to 2023)
  • The number of projects uploaded to Architizer (2009 to 2023)

Each of these metrics is explained in more detail at the foot of this article. This ranking list will be updated annually, taking into account new achievements of Indonesia architecture firms throughout the year.

oxo arc is research and experimental based office. It focuses on exploring the fundamentals of architecture through contemporary epistemological and ontological speculation. Consistently conducting mass studies, interiorities, ground, aperture and surface articulation — in particular, how these architectural elements can be broken down and arranged into resistance to each other. We call this a “flat ontology” architecture, where the architecture is made of the same discrete but different entities.

Our method is based on creating models, or specific three-dimensional entities that precede exposure to contingencies of program or site. They are a catalyst from the world we are exist (reality) as their own worlds (fantasy); we use the term “models” both in terms of physically constructed entities, and in terms of ways of seeing the universe.

The world, and in particular the Southeast Asian region, is today a very different place than it was the time of Enviro Tec’s inception in 1972. The practice also worked regionally. Its first overseas project (in 1972) was the International Convention Hall in Jakarta, Indonesia commissioned by PT. First Realty International Corp. It was one of the largest architectural projects in the city at that time, defining a new paradigm in Indonesian architecture with its wide-span tensile roof and earthquake-resistant ring structure. Yet another milestone came in 1978 with the preparation of a feasibility study and master plan for a US$200 million multifarious development project on 60 hectares of land in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
