There is little sign of its former life as an Irish pub at Paris’s Bar Nouveau, which evokes the glamour and craft of a bygone era on an intimate scale.

Atelier Alma oversaw the transformation of the micro-bar, using reclaimed materials and old-school craft methods to create a thoroughly vintage feel from relatively little.

The studio sourced unused 1970s tiles to create the multi-coloured mosaic floor and lined the ceiling with mirror panelling, which amplifies the cafe’s tiny footprint through visual trickery. Delicate, mushroom-inspired glass pendants light the space.

However, Bar Nouveau’s standout feature is its curlicued wooden elements that frame the bar and window, which really root the cafe in the Art Nouveau era. The menu, designed by feted barman Remy Savage, named ‘The World’s Most Imaginative Bartender’ in 2014, is equally nostalgic, serving classic cocktails – such as the century-old chrysanthemum – in hand-painted glassware.
