Doha must see architecture I.M. Pei
John Simmons

Located on the east coast of the Persian Gulf, Doha is Qatar’s most populous city and its financial hub. Its architecture is largely inspired by the country’s arid landscape, Islamic culture and geometric shapes.

Below is our list of the MUST-SEE Architecture in Doha. We hope you find it useful as you drive its sun-soaked streets; there’s a map at the bottom to guide you around. If you want to see your photo featured, hashtag #AVONTUURA or #mustseearchitecture on Instagram.

Qatar National Museum

Google Maps

The immersive and experiential NMoQ tells the story of Qatar and its people from more than 700 million years ago through to today, giving voice to Qatar’s rich heritage and culture and expressing a vibrant community’s aspirations for the future. The new museum embraces, as its centerpiece, the restored historic Palace of Sheikh Abdullah bin Jassim Al Thani (1880-1957), son of the founder of modern Qatar: a building that in former times was both the home of the Royal Family and the seat of government, and was subsequently the site of the original National Museum. Jean Nouvel’s new 40,000-square-meter (430,000-square-foot) building incorporates the Palace while seamlessly integrating innovative artworks commissioned from Qatari and international artists, rare and precious objects, documentary materials, and interactive learning opportunities.

Museum of Islamic Art

Google Maps

The Museum of Islamic Art, an architectural tour de force designed by internationally acclaimed Pritzker Prize-winning architect I.M. Pei (1917-2019), was the first institution opened by Qatar Museums in 2008 under the leadership of Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa. Prominently positioned on its own reclaimed island on the Corniche, specifically chosen by Pei, the Museum is a beacon for Islamic arts and a platform for international dialogue and exchange bridging past and present, East and West.
