25 Best Architecture Firms in India

When it comes to contemporary Indian design, the incredible work of Pritzker-prize and RIBA Gold medal winner B.V. Doshi is just the tip of the iceberg.

Architizer Editors Architizer Editors

India is a massive country with a long, complex history, and its architectural heritage reflects this varied past. With decolonization and independence in the mid-20th century, the country’s architects and politicians embraced modernist architecture as a symbolic move away from the past. In 1947, the country’s population totaled about 330 million, yet, there were just 300 trained architects. Today, the population of 1.38 billion consists of over 90,000 registered architects.

Rapidly growing urban centers and an influx of wealth continue to fuel architectural commissions, and even as skyscrapers go up, landscape designs are paid increasing attention. While many stories of the country’s design history have begun with outsiders like Le Corbusier and Louis Kahn, today, Indian architects have taken control of the narrative and are cultivating an incredible design culture within their country and beyond. When it comes to contemporary Indian design, the incredible work of Pritzker-prize and RIBA Gold medal winner B.V. Doshi is just the tip of the iceberg.

With so many architecture firms to choose from, it’s challenging for clients to identify the industry leaders that will be an ideal fit for their project needs. Fortunately, Architizer is able to provide guidance on the top design firms in India based on more than a decade of data and industry knowledge.

How are these architecture firms ranked?

The following ranking has been created according to key statistics that demonstrate each firm’s level of architectural excellence. The following metrics have been accumulated to establish each architecture firm’s ranking, in order of priority:

  • The number of A+Awards won (2013 to 2023)
  • The number of A+Awards finalists (2013 to 2023)
  • The number of projects selected as “Project of the Day” (2009 to 2023)
  • The number of projects selected as “Featured Project” (2009 to 2023)
  • The number of projects uploaded to Architizer (2009 to 2023)

Each of these metrics is explained in more detail at the foot of this article. This ranking list will be updated annually, taking into account new achievements of India architecture firms throughout the year.

Our firm’s objective is to create contextual design solutions that respond to the site topography and location while harnessing natural sunlight and ventilation. Each project takes cognizance of the culture, natural material availability and regional skills of artisans to revive traditional methods of construction and explore new technologies simultaneously. The designs explore spatial relationships and create engaging spaces that promote social interaction and new perceptions. Each project is designed to embody the spirit of the place and the people who will inhabit them. Sustainability and energy efficiency are integrated in the design of our buildings.

Working with a team of 72 architects and interior designers of which 60 percent are women, we have regular knowledge sessions to update ourselves with technological innovations, collaborating with various allied fields to enhance and improve our ideology toward creating meaningful architecture. Our recent projects involve interaction with villagers to revive old traditional & very sustainable design solutions, working with natural stone, bamboo, lime plaster, wood, terra cotta and other natural materials. We are involved in pro bono work to benefit rural areas of India, designing schools and other facilities in villages that have no access to education. Creating economical design solutions forms a key factor in the buildings we design. Our current projects are in thirty-six Indian cities of which twenty-seven are small cities with a lack of infrastructure.
