bold cabinets by freeling waters

The spotlight of VERSO’s Tribeca exhibition Wrong Shop will be five creations from Freeling Waters, a dynamic duo consisting of the painter-turned-muralist Gijs Frieling and the calligraphy maestro turned graphic designer, Job Wouters. Making their debut in the United States, this collection features meticulously reworked antique cabinets that pay homage to recycling and exemplary craftsmanship. Combining words and poetry amidst landscapes, organic motifs, geometric patterns, and material textures, these bold pieces evoke a marriage of past and present in an eclectic revival.

Throughout history, these painted cabinets have been cherished heirlooms, cherished and passed down through generations, primarily in the European Alpine regions. By breathing new life into these renovated 18th and 19th-century pine cabinets, the artists ingeniously transform their appearance, creating visually stimulating works that defiantly challenge the dominance of mass-produced objects and replicated imagery in today’s world. Painted inside and out with vibrant colors, the result is a striking manifestation of individuality and artistic expression.

erwan bouroullec shows limited edition wall hangings

VERSO gallery also showcases wall hangings by the world-renowned artist and designer Erwan Bouroullec. Famed for his contributions to furniture and lighting design in collaboration with his brother Ronan, Erwan’s current artistic pursuits delve into coding and unconventional forms that transcend the traditional design industry. The exhibition will feature his acclaimed ‘The Impossible’ paper limited edition from 2022, ingeniously reimagined as aluminum-backed wall hangings produced exclusively for The Wrong Shop.

Erwan’s multifaceted series serves as an exploration of our connection with and perception of the environment that surrounds us. Photographs of idyllic countrysides are harmoniously overlaid with abstract geometric patterns, expertly crafted using specially developed software. Printed on textiles with an aluminum foil backing, these art pieces possess both durability and flexibility, allowing for intriguing manipulations and crumpling. This innovative distortion adds depth and texture to Erwan’s creations, echoing the untamed essence of the wild landscapes and amplifying the mesmerizing allure of the geometric design.

graphic posters by richard woods

The Wrong Shop exhibition at VERSO’s Tribeca Gallery will also display the contemporary posters crafted by the talented British artist, Richard Woods. With his distinct style, Woods skillfully creates remarkable installations and sculptures that emulate the aesthetics of traditional architecture and interior design. His graphic poster collection, aptly titled ‘Windows,’ and exclusive to The Wrong Shop, was launched in 2022.

These litho-printed marvels feature a high gloss spot varnish, imparting depth and dimension to the windows and reflecting the playful spirit of his unique studio printing process. Woods invites viewers to appreciate the beauty and humor of our world through bold scale, patterned surfaces, vivid colors, and graphic lines.
