Architect designed pied-a-terre in Paris

Paris properties for sale February 2022 - The Spaces
Photography: Propriétés Parisiennes / Sotheby’s International Realty

1 bedroom; €1.295m via Propriétés Parisiennes Sotheby’s International Realty
Sitting within a former presbyterian church this architect-designed pied-à-terre maximises its floorplate through visual tricks including mirrored walls, an all-white colour palette and floating volumes. But it’s not all smoke and mirrors: gothic trefoil mullions and wrought iron rooflights are original and are a striking repost to the modern interventions.
The live/workspace is among a cache of Paris properties on the market right now, explored in our latest edit.

Midcentury Sydney time capsule by Harry Seidler

5 bedrooms; POA via De Brennan Property
Aussie starchitect Harry Seidler designed Sydney’s Renault House in 1969 in the suburb of Castle Cove, on the western side of Middle Harbour, for a local restaurateur. It’s a classic piece of Seidler architecture, with curvilinear forms, floor-to-ceiling glass and honest materiality that celebrates brickwork and craftsmanship. The cabinetry and fixtures are all original.

Frederick Fisher’s first solo project in Los Angeles

Photography: Marc Angeles

3 bedrooms; $3.495m via Compass
Boat forms and rolling waves inspired Frederick Fisher’s first solo project, completed in 1979 while he was still working in the six-person office of Frank Gehry. The Caplin House was designed for an artist and composer couple who had spent time living on the Seine, and the ribbed ceiling of the Venice Beach property’s living room and bedrooms recalls the hull of a riverboat. While that might sound prosaic, Fisher’s design is multifaceted and champions a refined and domesticated version of deconstructivism.

Photography: The Modern House

2 bedrooms; £400,000 via The Modern House

Scandinavian modernism washes up on the shore of the Outer Hebrides with this recently completed project by the local firm Rural Design. The cabin house and adjacent bothy are inspired by a Scottish barn and is clad in sustainable larch which beds it into its striking natural setting on the coast of Ross-shire, looking out towards the Isle of Skye and Eigg. Inside are oversized picture windows and serenely conceived interior volumes that hone cosy, understated minimalism.
