The heritage location of Cardiff’s long-shuttered David Morgan department store got a bump this month with the launch of the Cardiff Townhouse, the first Welsh location of the popular UK hospitality brand Coppa Club.

Distinctive pistachio-coloured frontage brightens up the landmark building designed by Edwin Seward in 1899 with decorative cornicing, cast-iron columns and vaulted window lights. Coppa Club’s 13th location benefits from the pedestrianised streets of the Hayes district in the city’s commercial centre.

New features in the old building include a staircase connecting the street-level cafe, bar, and workspace with the first-floor brasserie, snug, and atrium and a horseshoe-shaped cocktail bar set under the historic skylight. High-spec upholstery and shapely booths give the rambling space a cosy intimacy.

The 12-seat snug and 43-seat first-floor restaurant can be hired in their entirety. The kitchen caters to both floors with a broad menu of British and Mediterranean classics like sourdough pizzas, fresh pasta and high-quality meat and fish.

The expanding Coppa empire now extends across the West Country to London’s Home Counties.
