This new take on California modernism is properly remote

This contemporary classic on a mountainside near Ojai is as cosy as Brutalism gets in arid Southern California. Full-height windows absorb the colourful surrounds – fruit groves, avocado ranches, big blue skies and a bijou garden of aloe and olive around a tiled pool – and massive glass walls retract to create a seamless transition between indoors and out. A neutral scheme of light wood built-ins adds dimension to the cool concrete envelope, further softened by vintage textiles and rich upholsteries.

The 268 sq m California property was constructed in 2020, along with a separate studio on the 2.77-acre site. Designers looked beyond the requirements of the time to give it a chef’s kitchen with top appliances and a modular layout to suit any potential owner. A pool, spa and fireplaces give it year-round appeal, while solar energy, Tesla batteries, water filtration and electric gates make it a smart, self-contained retreat.

The three-bedroom Ojai home is currently on the market with Tyler Brousseau of LIV Sotheby’s International Realty for $3.195m.
