Rooftop gardens in bloom at Battersea Power Station by Foster + Partners

Battersea Roof Gardens

The residential amenities at Foster + Partners’ Battersea Roof Gardens development are now open, including a 29,000 square foot rooftop garden with 23,000 plants and 55 trees.

Grant Brooker, Head of Studio, Foster + Partners, said: “The rooftop gardens are for all of the building’s residents. The aim was to create a thriving parkland walkway that provides spectacular views across the river and to the city.”

James Corner of Field Operations and LDA Design created the gardens, which have a unique urban parkland feel. They feature grassy areas for exercise classes or social events – and soft ambient lighting which extends use into the evening hours.

Curved wooden seating areas echo the undulating form of the building and provide residents with a place to relax in nature and take in the panoramic views. Guests staying at the art’otel – a new 164-room hotel at Battersea Roof Gardens – also have access to their own rooftop garden with a cocktail bar and infinity pool.

Battersea Roof Gardens is part of Foster + Partners and Gehry Partners’ third phase of the Battersea Power Station mixed-use neighbourhood, which includes new homes, offices, a hotel and pedestrianised high street.

The split-level street – known as Electric Boulevard – acts as a gateway to the development and connects the new underground station with the newly redeveloped Grade II* listed Power Station. The street already offers a range of shops, cafes, bars and restaurants across both levels, with more opening soon, to create a vibrant new destination for London.
