The home occupies a verdant site in the Thu Duc district that is often flooded by a nearby river, requiring Vietnamese studio SDA to elevate its lowest level above ground by one metre. SDA, or Sanuki Daisuke Architects, is a studio founded by architect Sanuki Daisuke in Ho Chi Minh City in 2011.

The site presented challenging constraints including a former tenants’ hall and public right of way, existing mature trees and a neighbouring terrace of listed Georgian buildings. The landscape design achieves a net gain in biodiversity and exceeds the required urban greening factor of 0.5.

The demolition revealed the original roof trusses that were rescued and safely stored by the client who was hoping to reuse them. The client requested an open space that celebrates the view to the port and creates privacy from the surrounding. The trusses became an important feature of the new build.
