Our best year, in terms of converting Prospects to Projects was 2004. I know this as fact, because I track my firm’s Prospect to Project Ratio. Every year since Annmarie and I launched the firm in 1999, we’ve had a full workload. Our best conversion years have been the pre-Great Recession years of 2002 and 2004.

If there were good, recent books on passing a design firm’s ownership from founders to successors (there aren’t), it sounds as if Cheryl Barton, FASLA, and Kate Orff, FASLA, would have had little use for them. Early in her career, she worked at the Office of Dan Kiley and later was a principal at EDAW before that firm became a part of AECOM.

Our first experience with remote hiring was March 18, 2020 – the first day the firm started working from home. She returned in 2004 after earning her Master of Science in Architecture and Urban Design at Columbia University.
